SA stables spend up at Gold Coast sales

The Will Clarken stable may have left Queensland without success on track, but will return to Adelaide with five high-priced yearlings following the 2022 Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.

Clarken paid $400,000 for a colt by The Autumn Sun out of Cavaloce, a mare he trained to Listed success in Adelaide.

He also paid $200,000 for a So You Think colt out of Amalgamate, $150,000 for a Shamus Award colt out of Miss Ethics, $120,000 for a Brave Smash filly out of Our Girl Raquie and $100,000 for a Pierro filly in partnership with Ridgeport Holdings.

Richard and Chantelle Jolly also took a chance on the first crop of Brave Smash’s yearlings to go through the ring, paying $120,000 for a colt out of Occitan.

Michael Hickmott purchased a Lean Mean Machine filly for $60,000 while Chris Bieg also picked up two fillies for $170,000 and $100,000 in partnership with Brentknoll Bloodstock.

The McEvoy stable were prolific buyers.

Tony and Calvin welcomed 12 yearlings into their stable spending $3.05m with their high-priced buy a Snitzel filly out of Secret Trail who was purchased in partnership with MyRacehorse and Belmont Bloodstock.

The Phillip Stokes stable was also a big spender.

They picked up eight youngsters with the highest priced a Trapeze Artist colt from Cocoa Doll (pictured), who Stokes trained to win three of her nine starts. The hammer came down at $850,000 for top SA breeders Mill Park Stud.

Mill Park had eight yearlings go through the ring at an average of $349,375 while Cornerstone Stud sold a Harry’s Angel colt under the account of Cannon Hayes Stud for $400,000.

It was a stunning sale, with 19 million-dollar yearlings sold and a total gross of $229m at an average of $297,643 at a clearance rate of 93 per cent.
