Thoroughbreds impress at Equestrian events

Retired thoroughbred racehorses excelled at the Equestrian SA Horse of the Year events held last month at Strathalbyn and Mount Pleasant.

The events were supported by Through Care SA, the welfare arm of Racing SA, as part of its commitment to caring for thoroughbreds before, during and beyond their racetrack careers.

13-year-old Zara Young was one of the standout performers, winning the Show Jumping at Mount Pleasant with her off-the-tracker PP Master Class.

Speaking after the event, Zara’s mum Samantha said PP Master Class was one of three off-the-track chestnuts owned by the family.

“When people asked what type of horse we wanted for Zara I originally said not an off-the-tracker. However, we have ended up with three and they all have such a great attitude,” Samantha said.

“I find thoroughbreds are so willing and are naturally forward moving. They’ve got their own engine and are very eager.

“Zara started riding when she was about 2-years-old and we got her first off-the-tracker, Captain Lightning Bolt, when she was 11 and she’s had great success with them.

“We also find thoroughbreds stay naturally fit.”

At Strathabyn, Acacia Hryhorec claimed the All Stars Show Hunter Final on her off-the-tracker Hexham (also known by stable name Ollie) who previously raced as Jettyjettybangbang.

The 14-year-old plans to use the prizemoney from her win to purchase new show rugs for Ollie as well as a hot water wash so he can enjoy warm wash downs in future.

Acacia has competed in a number of the recent Through Care classes and her goal is now to qualify for Grand Nationals and for Ollie to win a big garland.

Congratulations to all of the riders and off-the-track thoroughbreds who competed in the Equestrian SA events.
