Icecrusher's last hurrah

In-form South Australian mare Icecrusher will be hoping to put some value into her post-racing career when she lines-up at Kensington in Sydney today.

The Shayne Cahill-trained mare has been a model of consistency since finding her way from Western Australia in early 2020. Icecrusher has won seven of 18 starts, two at city level, has only finished out of the top five once and earned connections just shy of $130,000 in prizemoney.

But unfortunately, the trip north means it’s the last we have seen of her on SA tracks.

“Sadly for us, the owners are keen to head to the breeding barn with her, so she’ll have a couple of starts in Sydney before going to the Hunter Valley,’’ Cahill said.

“It’s a shame, you wouldn’t find a sounder horse on the property here, she’s been good to us and was a pleasure to have here,’’ he said.

Cahill said discussing options with fellow trainer David Jolly will see the mare join the Brad Widdup stable.

“Both myself and the owners spoke to David about the options and he suggested Brad would be a good fit,’’ Cahill said.

“David stays with him in Sydney, and Brad does a really good job with his mares,’’ he said.

The Adelaide Cup winning rider has booked Hugh Bowman to ride Icecrusher, who is marked a $5 chance with tab.com.au from barrier four.

Meanwhile Cahill will be hoping for a change of luck with the talented four-year-old Morty at Murray Bridge on Saturday after a luckless first-up outing at Gawler.

“Nothing really went right for him,’’ Cahill said.

“He was probably in the wrong part of the track, hopefully we can turn things around this weekend.

“We also have Effortkat and Gatsby’s Girl going around,’’ he said.
