Thoroughbred Racing SA Stewards advise that the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the late scratching of and the race-day treatment practices involving the racehorse Eastender which was entered to race in the 2019 Adelaide Cup resumed on Thursday 30 May 2019.
Further evidence was taken and Mr Barry Campbell, the trainer of Eastender, and Ms Tania Coward, Mr. Campbell’s Stable Foreperson were provided an opportunity to enter pleas to charges, which were laid against them on 21 May 2019. Those charges were as follows:
In respect of Mr. Campbell
Three (3) charges were laid against him under the following rules of racing:
Charge 1: AR.254(1)(a)(i) – the brief particulars being;
That Mr Barry Campbell, on Monday morning, 11 March 2019, as the trainer of the racehorse Eastender which was entered to race in Race 7 – the Adelaide Cup, while present at a stable, at Morphettville in the presence of Ms Tania Coward, injected, without Stewards permission, the racehorse Eastender by inserting a hypodermic needle, with a syringe attached thereto, which syringe contained sterile potassium chloride Concentrate (IV) 10mmol (0.75g) in 10mL and Ilium water for injections BP.
Charge 2: AR.249(1)(a) – the brief particulars being;
That Mr Barry Campbell, on Monday morning, 11 March 2019 while present at a stable at Morphettville in the presence of Ms Tania Coward, administered without the permission of Stewards a medication via hypodermic needle and syringe containing sterile potassium chloride Concentrate (IV) 10mmol (0.75g) in 10mL and Ilium water for injections BP, to the racehorse Eastender which was entered in Race 7 – the Adelaide Cup.
Charge 3: AR.229(1)(b) – the brief particulars being;
That Mr Barry Campbell, on Monday morning, 11 March 2019, as the trainer of the racehorse Eastender which was entered to race in Race 7 – the Adelaide Cup, engaged in conduct which was intended to corrupt the outcome of a race;
- That race being Race 7 at the Morphettville Racecourse on Monday, 11 March 2019, and,
- The conduct being that Mr. Campbell, while present at a stable at Morphettville, in the presence of Ms. Tania Coward injected via a hypodermic needle and syringe a solution pre mixed by him, which solution contained, sterile potassium chloride Concentrate (IV) 10mmol (0.75g) in 10mL and Ilium water for injections BP, to Eastender.
In respect of Ms. Coward
Two (2) charges were laid against her under the following rules of racing:
Charge 1: AR.254(1)(d)(i) – the brief particulars being;
That Ms Tania Coward, on Monday morning, 11 March 2019, as the Stable Foreperson for Mr. Campbell, and in relation to the racehorse Eastender which was entered to race in Race 7 – the Adelaide Cup, while present at a stable at Morphettville, in the presence of Mr. Barry Campbell, the trainer of the horse, was a party to the racehorse Eastender being injected, without Stewards permission, by Mr. Barry Campbell, who inserted a hypodermic needle, with a syringe attached thereto, which syringe contained sterile potassium chloride Concentrate (IV) 10mmol (0.75g) in 10mL and Ilium water for injections BP.
Charge 2: AR.229(1)(b) – the brief particulars being;
That Ms. Tania Coward on Monday morning, 11 March 2019, as the Stable Foreperson of Mr. Campbell , the trainer of the racehorse Eastender which was entered to race in Race 7 – the Adelaide Cup, engaged in conduct which was intended to corrupt the outcome of a race;
- That race being Race 7 at the Morphettville Racecourse on Monday, 11 March 2019, and,
- The conduct being that Ms. Coward, while present at a stable at Morphettville and in the presence of Mr. Barry Campbell, when he injected via a hypodermic needle and syringe a solution pre mixed by him, which solution contained sterile potassium chloride Concentrate (IV) 10mmol (0.75g) in 10mL and Ilium water for injections BP, to Eastender, was a party to and remained present with the horse and held such horse with the knowledge that a race day administration to Eastender by way of injection was about to take place, and did take place, and that such injection was contrary to the rules of racing.
At the inquiry, Mr. Campbell and Ms. Coward entered the following pleas:

Charge 2: Not Guilty
Charge 3: Not Guilty
Ms. Coward
Charge 1: Guilty
Charge 2: Not Guilty
The pleas entered by both parties were noted for the record, and following a submission by Mr. Campbell, the inquiry has again been adjourned to allow further evidence to be advanced for consideration. A date and time for the continuation of the inquiry is yet to be fixed.
